OHANA FAMILY HAWAII ACTIVIITES
I was looking over your list of free things to do in Maui and I have one that is not on the list. I have been to Maui 4 times and my son lived in Maui for a year working as a chef in the Westin Maui.
He was the one who told me about this treasure. There is a park and bay about 10 minutes north of Kapalua call Honolua Bay Park and Honalua Bay. You basically follow the highway that takes you from Lahiana and Knaapali Beach north to Kapalua and continue an additional 10 minutes.
There is simply a sign on the side of the road that says "Honolua Bay Park." You park your car on the side of the road and walk down a wooden stairway to the beach area. There are some picnic tables and a park area but the beach is all black rock. It is the best snorkeling I have ever seen in my life.
You basically put on your gear and slither into the water on you stomach until you get past the rocks and then you will see walls of fish, sea turtles, eels, and just a myriad of colorful fish. My son had told us the wall of fish was there every time he went snorkeling. We literally swam through thousands of fish and they parted to let us swim through. It was just incredible. Mostly local people go to snorkel there. Just thought I shouldpass this on. It is truly amazing.
