Ia Orana from Gayle Zielke, Your Certified Tahiti Tiare Specialist 🌺
If you know me at all, you know this to be true: Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea, and the South Pacific are where my heart lives. I have been here 8 times and it never gets old! There is something truly magical about being there. When I arrive, I feel like I have the whole world in my hands—because I’m in Paradise… my idea of Paradise is Tahiti!
When most people hear the word Tahiti, they imagine one dreamy island. But the legendary name Tahiti represents far more than just the main island of Tahiti and its capital, Papeete. It also encompasses the breathtaking collection of islands that make up French Polynesia.
And here’s the secret: each island has its own personality, history, and charm.
Choosing Your Tahitian Island
Choosing which island to visit in Tahiti is like opening a jewelry box.Do you reach for a diamond, ruby, emerald, black pearl, sapphire, or tanzanite?
As a Tahiti Tiare Specialist, my role is to help you choose the perfect jewel for YOU—based on your travel style, dreams, and what kind of magic you’re seeking.
Papeete, Tahiti – The Sapphire of the Islands
I had to take my daughters to experience Tahiti for themselves. It was a brilliant idea and fabulous Mother and Daughters trip to remember forever!
I like to call Papeete the Sapphire of French Polynesia.
Papeete is the bustling capital of Tahiti and one of the most romantic ports of call in the South Pacific. This lively island offers:
- Two dramatic mountain peaks
- Black velvet beaches
- The best shopping in French Polynesia
- Even pink coral reefs
Papeete is also home to the international airport, so nearly everyone begins their Tahitian journey here—by plane or by ship.
Downtown Papeete reminds me a bit of Honolulu. You’ll find:
- Le Marché (the local market)
- The famous Pearl Market—the best place to shop for black pearls
- Shopping centers near hotels and along the waterfront
Evenings in Papeete: A Must-Do Experience
At night, don’t miss Les Roulottes, the beloved food trucks gathered along the waterfront near the piers. It’s the perfect way to enjoy local cuisine, mingle with both locals and travelers, and dine casually and affordably.
Getting around is easy, too. The local transportation, known as Le Truck, can take you from your hotel into town for just a few dollars. I always recommend exchanging small amounts of currency for day-to-day purchases—U.S. dollars are accepted, but you’ll receive local francs in change.
Travel to the opposite side of Tahiti and you’ll discover a completely different atmosphere—lush waterfalls, quiet villages, and scenery so nostalgic it feels like stepping into a classic film.
And speaking of films…
Tahiti, Hollywood & Island Legends
Tahiti and its neighboring islands have inspired storytellers for generations.
- Mutiny on the Bounty was filmed three times (1935, 1962, 1984)
- An Affair to Remember (1957) was filmed on Moorea
- South Pacific was inspired by James Michener, who was stationed on Bora Bora during World War II
Michener’s tales turned Bora Bora into the mythical island of “Bali Hai.”
On one of my own visits, Bora Bora was buzzing with paparazzi while Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, and Kristen Bell filmed Couples Retreat. Sadly, I missed the celebrities—I was far too enchanted by my overwater bungalow to notice!
I have the whole world in my arms, my paradise, my happy place!
A Polynesian Night to Remember
On one of my recent stays, I enjoyed a panoramic room at the InterContinental Papeete, newly remodeled and absolutely wonderful.
That Saturday night, I experienced “Bounty Night”, a spectacular Polynesian show reenacting the mutiny on the HMS Bounty. Performed by Les Grands Ballets de Tahiti, this show is exclusive to this hotel and is truly a must-see.
Moorea – Adventure, Romance & Natural Beauty (A beautiful Ruby)
Moorea is pure joy and remains one of my favorite islands in Tahiti. As a sister island to the popular Bora Bora, it offers a similar experience at nearly half the price!!! I consider Moorea the RUBY of French Polynesia, even though this is where I bought the most BLACK PEARLS!
The snorkeling in Moorea is amazing. Because the water is quite shallow, you can easily stand up while viewing the abundance of fish and coral up close.
One of the best ways to experience the island is on a half-day Jeep Safari. You’ll explore:
- Ancient temples
- Vanilla plantations
- Hidden waterfalls where you can jump right in
It’s fun, social, and shows you parts of the island you’d never see otherwise. (And yes—there’s even a version just for honeymoon couples!)
- Swimming with the whales was really popular excursion when I was there this year
- ATV tours are an exciting way to see more of the island.
If you can tear yourself away from snorkeling and watersports, rent a car for the day. Moorea is easy to navigate, nearly impossible to get lost, and driving the full loop is a fantastic experience.
Insider Tips:
- Surprise your partner with a canoe breakfast if you’re staying in an overwater bungalow
- Book a private candlelight dinner under the stars
- Never miss the Polynesian show at your hotel—authentic, powerful, and unforgettable
- Popular restaurants like Rudy's will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel for FREE! That is a huge plus vs taking an expensive taxi $$ Make a reservation online and you will be happy you did!
Bora Bora – The Ultimate Dream Destination (Definitely the Diamond of FP)
Helmut diving with my daughters when a big stingray photo bombed us!
Just saying the name—Bora Bora—sparks the imagination.
Everyone should experience Bora Bora at least once in their lifetime. Put it on your bucket list. Even the most beautiful brochures don’t compare to your first glimpse of those incredible shades of blue.
Some unforgettable experiences include:
- Shark and Ray Feeding
- The incredible Helmet Dive (yes, I did it a couple of times—and loved every second!)
- Snorkeling with vibrant tropical fish, stingrays, and sharks
And you absolutely cannot miss Bloody Mary’s Restaurant—sand floors, live ukulele music, and the chance to choose your own fresh seafood. Very authentic.
Bora Bora is adventure, romance, beauty, and wonder all wrapped into one unforgettable island.
Le Taha'a (A Hidden gem Emerald)
Le Taha’a by Pearl Resorts is a dream destination for travelers seeking romance, serenity, and authentic Polynesian charm. I think perfect for someone going alone too as that is what I did! Known as the “Vanilla Island,” Taha’a is infused with the sweet scent of vanilla and offers a peaceful escape surrounded by turquoise lagoons and lush scenery. I could smell the vanilla all over the island and couldn't wait to enjoy it with my dinner.
The resort is celebrated for its award-winning hospitality and elegant overwater bungalows, providing privacy, breathtaking views, and direct lagoon access. Guests can savor fresh, locally inspired cuisine while soaking in the relaxed rhythm of island life.
Though tranquil, Le Taha’a offers plenty to explore, from visiting vanilla plantations and pearl farms to jet skiing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. The renowned coral garden is a must-see, home to stingrays, eagle rays, sea turtles, and vibrant tropical fish.
Le Taha’a is an ideal choice for honeymooners, anniversary trips, or anyone seeking a refined, quieter romantic escape in French Polynesia.
Rangiroa (A Black Pearl because it is hard to find and a gem worth the effort)
I visited this exotic island and found it to be a perfect getaway for those who prefer a quiet, secluded vacation. You can enjoy a private villa with a pool and experience the warm, passionate service that characterizes this hidden paradise. I experienced the best Polynesian show here with small children and adults. Very authentic and private.
